I've been visiting folk clubs outside the North Wales area of late, doing floor spots in an attempt to get a gig for myself - I'll keep you posted if I get positive news. But, travelling back to the Conwy valley from, say, Uttoxeter or Garstang in the early hours, I find there's nothing quite like a bit of Canned Heat to keep me awake and interested. I mean, have you really listened recently to their big hit On The Road Again? Blind Owl's harmonica work is just stunning all the way through, it's even fantastic on the long fade-out ending, a few little subtle nuances here and there. And that voice! The Very Best Of Canned Heat has a snapshot of their best work, including my favourite, World In A Jug, and of course Let's Work Together. Fito's drumming - that's the way drums should sound! And then I usually follow Canned Heat with a little Elder Roma Wilson, Tracy Nelson with Mother Earth, Steve Miller Band - and Outside Woman Blues by Blind Joe Reynolds. Whatever gets you through the night (or early morning).
